- Surge Protector Defective
What it means
Surge protector (SPD) in fault state: red visual indicator, varistor degraded after lightning or overvoltage event. Plant protection compromised.
Probable causes
- Overvoltage from direct or induced lightning that degraded the varistor.
- Natural varistor aging (leakage current increased over time).
- SPD not correctly sized for the site's overvoltage level.
- Missed periodic maintenance: red indicator not noticed during inspections.
Where to start
Visually check the SPD status indicator (inspection window). Is the indicator green (OK) or red (fault)?
