What it means
The boiler safety valve has opened, releasing steam because the internal pressure exceeded the set limit (typically 1.8-2.0 bar for the steam boiler). The regulation pressurestat did not cut off heating at the set value.
Probable causes
- Regulation pressurestat faulty with contacts welded in the closed position.
- Heating element permanently energized due to relay fault on the board.
- Safety valve with weakened spring opening at too low a pressure.
- Massive limescale in the boiler reducing the usable volume and increasing pressure.

Check the steam boiler pressure gauge. What was the reading before shutdown? Is the regulation pressurestat calibrated correctly (typically 1.2-1.4 bar)?
