- Reference standard
- IEC 60751 / DIN EN 60751
- Product / context
- Sensor break (open circuit)
What it means
The RTD temperature probe (PT100 or PT1000) shows an abnormal resistance value: infinite resistance (open circuit) or near-zero resistance (short circuit). The transmitter or PLC analog input detects the fault condition and displays an out-of-range temperature (typically 9999°C or -200°C). The associated temperature control is compromised.
Probable causes
- Probe wires broken due to mechanical vibration or thermal fatigue (especially at the junction between cable and head).
- Moisture infiltration in the probe head causing short circuit between wires or to the sheath.
- Probe damaged by over-temperature (exceeded maximum operating range).
- Incorrect connection: mismatch between 2, 3, or 4 wire scheme and input configuration (wire compensation not correct).
Reference values
| PT100 IEC60751 ohm | {"0C":100,"100C":138.5,"coefficiente":"0.385 Ω/°C"} |
|---|---|
| PT1000 | same values ×10 |
| nota | With 3/4-wire sensors compensate the lead wire resistance. |
Where to start
Disconnect the probe from the transmitter or PLC input and measure the resistance across the probe with a multimeter. For a PT100 at room temperature (~20°C), the expected value is approximately 107.8Ω. Is the resistance reasonable?
